Bob Richards OAM was inducted into Australia's Seafood Hall of Fame at the 2022 Seafood Directions conference in September 2022. Seafood Directions is Australia's seafood conference, an opportunity for Australia's seafood professionals to gather, meet and learn from each other.
Bob was recognised for his many years and tireless efforts spent developing the Barramundi aquaculture industry over almost three decades.
'To be inducted into the Hall of Fame, that acknowledges many heroes and characters from our industry, is an absolute honour’, Hall of Fame inductee, Bob told the NT Seafood Council.
‘It is extremely rewarding after 29 years working in the seafood industry, to see how Humpty Doo Barramundi (HDB) has grown. I never set out with the vision of what HDB is today, rather, I played my part by solving one problem at a time.’
Bob was also recognised by RM Williams Outback Magazine in their ’20 Great Australians’ feature which was released in June 2022.
The food is designed to mimic our Barra's natural diet needs as much as possible while easing pressure on wild fish stocks by incorporating a range of proteins from vegetables and grains, as well as proteins from places that manufacture food for human consumption, including chicken, beef and fish. Instead of being discarded, these proteins are heat treated and dried, allowing what would normally be wasted to be converted into sustainable barramundi food and form part of a circular economy.
Barramundi can digest a wide range of proteins to optimise their health and growth. In the wild, they will eat other fish, birds, frogs, prawns, crabs, tadpoles, insects etc - if it's in the water, and it fits in their mouths, they'll eat it!
By incorporating proteins that would otherwise be discarded, we can grow a premium Australian product sustainably, while reducing pressure on our oceans and reducing food waste.
